Composite support for metacity is in the current unstable release; according to [1] it works with awn now. 76.161.200.5 07:27, 21 December 2007 (PST)

All testing I have done and this has been confirmed by others is that it is still broken with regard to several applets that popup windows. I'll try and compile a list at some point.
